On-airport parking: garages, lots and terminal access

On-airport parking can simplify the final part of your drive, but the right choice depends on the terminal, the parking product and the route between them. Establish whether you are booking a walkable garage, a remote lot or a reserved area, then check the vehicle and access rules for that exact facility.

Separate airport location, operator and transfer

Start on the airport’s official parking pages to identify its named facilities and the operator responsible for your booking. A business can use an airport name or be located near airport land without being the airport’s own parking product. Even within the official system, covered, uncovered, short-term and economy choices can work differently.

BWI’s Daily Garage uses a parking shuttle, as do its Express and Long Term lots. By contrast, a terminal-adjacent garage may connect through a pedestrian bridge or an elevator route. The word “garage” tells you about the building, not the transfer. Look at the airport map and your airline’s terminal before comparing convenience. [1]

Choose the route you will actually use

Check which garage entrance serves your product and whether the pedestrian exit leads to your terminal. If departure and arrival terminals differ, plan the return route too. Count the practical stages: parking, unloading, reaching an elevator or shuttle stop, and arriving at the airline’s check-in area. A close garage can still involve a substantial walk with luggage.

Use the facility address or entrance instructions from the confirmation for navigation. Airport road loops may divide quickly into arrivals, departures, car rentals and parking. Keep the confirmation available offline and allow time to follow signs. If an entrance is closed or a lot is full, use the airport’s published alternatives rather than circling without a plan.

Reserved areas and drive-up spaces are different

Read which parking area your reservation permits you to enter. At SEA, Reserved Parking is a distinct garage product accessed with the confirmation QR code. The airport also states that an individual stall, accessible stall or EV stall cannot be selected through that general reservation. A space reservation and a particular space requirement are therefore separate questions. [2]

Use the entry method specified by the booking, and check the rules for entering early, leaving late, changing dates and cancellation. Do not assume a drive-up rate is the prepaid rate. If you have not reserved, check current airport availability before driving and keep an alternative product in mind. Save a copy of any booking changes.

Measure before entering a garage

Clearance is facility-specific. SEA publishes a garage height limit of 6 feet 10 inches, while DEN states an eight-foot garage clearance. Those examples are not interchangeable rules for other airports or even every parking area at one airport. Measure your vehicle with roof equipment fitted and follow the clearance signs at the entrance you intend to use. [3] [4]

Also check length, width, trailer and oversized-vehicle restrictions. A surface product may be a better fit, but its availability and access route still need confirmation. Do not enter a lower garage while searching for an oversized section. If dimensions are close to the published limit, contact the parking operator before the trip.

Confirm the complete accessible route

A marked space is only one part of accessible parking. Check the route to an elevator, the distance to check-in, curb crossings and any transfer vehicle. SEA publishes a wheelchair-accessible connection from its overheight lot through the garage and an elevator to the terminal. Use the current airport map to find the route that suits your vehicle and mobility needs. [5]

Arrange airline assistance separately where needed. Tell the parking operator about a lift-equipped van, mobility device or boarding requirement before arrival, and confirm how the return journey works. Ask what to do if the preferred accessible spaces are occupied. A parking payment or reservation should not be treated as confirmation of wheelchair assistance.

Check the charging product as carefully as the space

Find out whether the booking includes a charger, only access to a charging area, or ordinary parking with chargers available elsewhere. Confirm the connector, any account or payment method and the charging tariff. At SEA, EV stalls are allocated on arrival. LAX describes separate EV parking and charging arrangements, including charges for energy use. [3] [6]

Plan enough battery reserve to reach an alternative charger after the trip. Ask whether you can remain connected for the stay, whether an idle charge applies and whether staff need keys to move the vehicle. The useful promise is the one in the selected product’s terms; proximity to a charger does not confirm availability or inclusion in the parking price.

Check overnight and extended-stay permission

A parking area suitable for meeting a passenger is not necessarily intended for a week away. DEN identifies its short-term product as unsuitable for overnight parking. SEA requires an online reservation or special arrangements for stays beyond 30 days. Check the current maximum stay and extension procedure for your chosen facility, especially for a long trip. [4] [3]

Use your expected vehicle-exit time rather than the flight’s landing time when calculating the stay. Allow for baggage, the terminal-to-car journey and a reasonable delay. Keep the operator’s contact details so an unexpected extension can be handled before a maximum-stay condition is reached.

Leave a clear record for the return

Photograph the level, row, nearest elevator and any parking ticket instructions. Remove valuables, close windows and lock the car. DEN explicitly reminds drivers to secure vehicles even though its lots are patrolled. If a problem is apparent on return, record it and contact the operator using the facility’s published process before losing useful location or timing details. [4]

Follow the correct pay-station or exit instructions and retain the receipt. Check that the vehicle is ready for the drive home before leaving the space. For a late-night arrival, know where to request assistance and how to reach the car without relying on a phone signal inside the garage.

Frequently asked questions

Is official airport parking always beside the terminal?

No. Official airport systems can include remote lots and shuttle-served garages. Confirm the transfer method, terminal and entrance for the named product before booking.

Can I leave my car overnight in any airport garage?

Check the specific product. Some parking is intended for short visits, while other products accept overnight or extended stays. Maximum-stay rules and extension procedures still apply.

Can I reserve an accessible parking bay?

It depends on the airport and product. A general parking reservation may not reserve an individual accessible bay. Confirm the allocation rules and the step-free route with the airport.

What should I do if my vehicle is close to the height limit?

Measure it with roof equipment fitted and contact the parking operator before reserving. Use only an entrance and parking area whose published dimensions accommodate the vehicle.
